Life-Changing Experience

In July and August of 2018, Advocates for Africa’s Children had the privilege of hosting a youth team of 27 students. Chaperones also joined the team in eSwatini (formerly Swaziland). While the team traveled with the goal of serving others, they quickly discovered that the experience would change their own lives.
Throughout their time in the village, the youth team lived at the local church compound and worked alongside community members. They painted a newly constructed preschool, helped improve community spaces, and built a home for a family in need.
However, the impact of the trip reached far beyond the physical work.
As the students immersed themselves in daily village life, they gained a new perspective on challenges many families face every day. They experienced firsthand the effort required to collect clean water, prepare meals, bathe, and purchase basic necessities. Consequently, many returned home with a deeper appreciation for resources that are often taken for granted.
At the same time, the local community welcomed the team with warmth, hospitality, and generosity. Through shared meals, conversations, worship, and work, meaningful relationships formed between the visitors and the families they served.
Youth Team and a Family in Need
One of the most memorable projects involved building a home for a family with eight children. The father lives with a disability, yet he works hard to provide for his family by creating beautiful handmade wooden crafts.
The youth team admired his determination, creativity, and strong commitment to his family. As they worked together, they developed a genuine connection with him and learned more about his life and his craft. In addition, many team members purchased his handmade items, including walking sticks and carved wooden animals, providing additional support for his family.
A new house stood tall where there once was uncertainty . The greatest change may have been the relationships that were built along the way.
The Power of Service
Mission experiences like this demonstrate the power of service. When volunteers step outside their comfort zones, they not only help meet practical needs, but they also gain a deeper understanding of God’s work. Furthermore, they return home with new friendships, greater compassion, and a renewed desire to serve their own communities.
For many members of this youth team, the trip became a defining moment in their faith journey. They witnessed resilience in the face of hardship, generosity in the midst of scarcity, and joy that transcended circumstances.
As we reflect on this experience, we are grateful for every student, donor, and community member who made it possible. Together, they demonstrated how service, partnership, and faith can transform lives on both sides of the journey.
If you have ever considered joining a mission team, we invite you to explore future opportunities with AFAC. You may arrive expecting to change someone else’s life, but you may discover that your own life changes as well.
